Phoenix 5-Axis Gantry



Phoenix has recently completed building a 5-Axis Gantry. As with most of our projects, it's big, and designed to meet the customer's specific needs. This machine provides 40 feet of longitudinal travel, 16 feet of cross travel and 10 feet of vertical travel. The machine bridge will span three floor plates with two mounted at floor level and one buried deep in the foundation. This design will allow the customer to machine parts of various sizes. The gantry mill features a 14" ram cross section, with a 40KW live spindle and a two axis universal head offering the same horsepower. The longitudinal and cross travel axes are driven by rack and pinion with dual Fanuc servo motors. The vertical axis is driven by a precision ground ballscrew with a Fanuc AC servo motor. All of the axes are provided with linear absolute scales to provide maximum accuracy. Controlling the machine is a Fanuc Model 30i control.

Remanufacture/Retrofit of 60" Gray VTL

This picture represents the latest remanufacture/retrofit completed by our company. You will notice from the photo graph that the original design (2 manual ram assemblies) was modified to incorporate a new ram and automatic tool changer assembly. The machine was originally NC with an outdated control and drive packages. As the machine had been running for over twenty years, the mechanical side had issues as well. As part of the mechanical remanufacture we restored all of the original alignments by grinding, scraping and replacing the original ballscrew/nut assemblies. We also incorporated new Newall feedback scales, a new Trabon automatic lubrication system and a new Renishaw tool probe system. All of the original electrics and hydraulics were removed and replaced. As part of the new system, we installed a new Fanuc 31i-TA control along with new AC servo motors and a new Fanuc 60KW spindle drive package. This machine will now be re-installed at this major valve manufacturer and provide another 20 years of 1st class service.

Remanufacture/Retrofit of 48" G&L VTL

This picture represents the latest remanufacture/retrofit completed by our company. The machine was originally NC with an outdated control and drive package. As the machine had been running for over twenty years, the mechanical side had issues as well. As part of the mechanical remanufacture we restored all of the original alignments by grinding, scraping and replacing the original ballscrew/nut assemblies. We also incorporated new Heidenhain linear feedback scales, a new Trabon automatic lubrication system and a new Renishaw tool probe system. All of the original electrics and hydraulics were removed and replaced. As part of the new system, we installed a new Fanuc 0i-d control along with new AC servo motors and a new Fanuc 40KW spindle drive package. This machine will now be re-installed at this major aircraft engine facility and provide another 20 years of 1st class service.

Remanufacture/Retrofit of Gray Traveling Column HBM

This Gray traveling column horizontal boring mill was recently remanufactured and retrofit for a major power generation supplier. The machine was originally all manual with rack and pinion drives and a shared drive system for the bar and sleeve. The original rack and pinion drives were removed and replaced with new ballscrews and the combination drive system for the bar/sleeve was redesigned and split to include an individual ballscrew for each axis. Each of the five linear axes along with the new spindle drive package was controlled by a new Fanuc Model 310i CNC. The machine is currently being installed in the customer's facility and will be turned over to production in November of this year.

Phoenix VTMC 84/100

This Phoenix VTMC 84/100 was installed at a major aerospace company in January, 2010. The machine is equipped with two rams; one is dedicated to milling and drilling while the other is dedicated to turning. This machine is also equipped with an automated pallet changer consisting of five pallets and a live setup station.

Phoenix VTMC 160/300

This Phoenix VTMC 160/300 was installed at a manufacturer of large bearings used in the construction and wind energy industries in February, 2010. The machine is equipped with two rams and was provided with table extensions to allow bearings up to 300" diameter to be turned as well as milled and drilled.

Gray/Phoenix 14' Vetical Boring Mill

This Gray/Phoenix 14' Vertical Boring Mill was installed at a large power generation shop in February, 2010. This machine used the basic frame of a Gray manual vertical boring mill but added full CNC controls and ball screws as well as a new ram (with 108" stroke) and ram housing. The Phoenix Rail leveling and elevation system was also added to this machine. Parts up to 14 Ft. in diameter and 16 Ft, tall can be turned on this machine.

Phoenix VTMC 144/160

This Phoenix VTMC 144/160 was installed at a large job shop in April, 2010. This machine is equipped with a single combination ram allowing both milling and turning operations to be performed. The machine is also equipped with a CNC controlled adjustable cross rail which incorporates rail leveling. Parts up to 160" diameter and 100" tall can be turned as well as milled and drilled on this machine.
